Industry and Innovation
Cork has long been a leader in various industrial sectors. Its first real foray in to the international eye was in food as the biggest and most important butter market in the world back in 18th/19th century.
In the early 20th century we were one of the biggest producers of tractors outside of the US compliments of the arrival of Henry Ford whose father originated from Cork.
With a large sheltered harbour and deep water port facilities the city became a magnet for the pharmaceutical sector and attracted many of the world leaders such as Pfizer, Abbot, GSK and many more.
As the IT hardware sector boomed in the 1980’s and 90’s, Apple set up its European HQ in the city which in turn attracted even more multi-nationals. Many of these have evolved further in to Cloud Computing and are now establishing Cork as one of the global leaders in the space.
One of the sexiest high-tech industries in the world right now is the whole area of nano-technology and one of the global leaders is the Tyndall Institute. Yes you guessed, its right here in the heart of Cork City and is a spin off from University College Cork.
